Dr Jackie's tips for staying mentally healthy
Looking after your mental health is as important as taking care of yourself physically. Here are some effective ways to stay mentally healthy.
1. Talk about your feelings
We all struggle emotionally at times – it is normal. It is not a sign of weakness to feel low, anxious or depressed. Try talking to friends or family members. If you open up to them then you may find that they share their feelings with you too.
2. Keep moving
Try to exercise regularly. This doesn’t have to be anything formal. Going for a walk or dancing around the house to your favourite music. Whatever you fancy – just get moving!
3. Get outside
Even if you only have the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, why not do this outside in the fresh air? Observing nature can help to ground us and connect us with the natural environment.
4. Eat well - drink sensibly
A balanced and varied diet is crucial for your physical and mental well-being. Become more aware of when and why you drink alcohol. If you drink to lift your mood – this will only be a temporary feeling - using alcohol this way can quickly lead to a habit which can become hard to break.
5. Keep your friends close
The pandemic has made social contact more difficult, yet at the same time, highlighted the need for social relationships. If it is not possible to see friends or family safely, keep in touch by phone, text, video - or form a social messaging group.
6. Give yourself a break
Not only is it important to take a physical break from work activities and to get some rest – try taking a break from being so hard on yourself!
7. Ask for support
You don’t have to struggle alone. Ask for help from friends, neighbours or family members. Or seek professional help. Remember, asking for support when you are in psychological distress is not a sign of weakness – it is a sign that you value your mental health.
